Tension Springs:  Roll-up garage door systems use torsion springs to lift most of the weight of a garage door, so the door can then be opened manually or by an automatic opener. These springs have an expected life of about 10,000 cycles.  If you open & close your door 3-4 times a day they should last about 7-10 years.  Typically, garage doors have one or two torsion springs to balance out the doors weight. Garage doors with one spring are usually too lightweight to have two springs, such as single-wide doors.  Two car garage doors with two springs tend to be safer, especially if one spring breaks when the door is opening or closing. If one spring breaks, the other spring will keep its tension and keep the garage door from falling.

Extension Springs:  One-piece garage door systems use side mounted extension springs to accommodate easier garage door lifting. Typically one-piece garage doors use one or two extension springs on each side of the door, for a total of 2 or 4 springs on the door. The average lifespan of extension garage door springs is 10-12 years.
Torque Master by Wayne Dalton:  Some newer homes were built with a Wayne Dalton designed TorqueMaster spring system to lift the weight of their roll-up garage door. The Torquemaster system has one or two springs inside of the shaft. Typically this spring system last 5-10 years before a spring breaks inside of the shaft. To fix the issue the entire Torquemaster system would need to be replaced. Because of the short life of the Torquemaster we entirely convert just the doors spring system to a more traditional Torsion Spring System. The existing door works perfectly with the newly installed Torsion Spring System and is a more cost effective choice.
